CAT 5 (UTP) Network Cable as Speaker cable

Start with 3 lengths of Cat5 cable (Slightly longer than the actual cable length you require) tape the ends together and start to weave the cable keeping it fairly tight.

This is the worst bit! Hurts like hell after a while.

When you’ve plaited the whole cable, tape the other end with about 4 inches of cable un-plaited. fig1.

Next Strip 2-3 inches of the outer casing off the ends revealing the stranded twisted pair cables. Untwist all the pairs down to the outer sleeve. Next strip off about ¾ inch off each of the untwisted cables Fig2

Make sure you keep the coloured cables and the striped ones separate. Select the coloured cables and twist all of them together. Fit the Banana plug. You could solder the cable at this point but just to see if it will work this is good enough. Fig3.

Fig 3.

Do the same for the striped cable. Fig4.

The finished cable should look something like this. Fig5.

So long as you do the same at both ends you won’t go wrong. It is very important to get things right. Don’t cross the stripes and the solid colours over. If you do you may blow your amps or speakers or both!

Hope this makes things clearer. Adding heatshrink to the cable finishes the cable off.

Good luck
